7-Eleven Taiwan’s X-STORE 9 relies on cameras alone for checkout
Developed with ITRI, the unmanned store at a university campus tracks multiple shoppers in real time and identifies picked-up or returned items with 95% accuracy.
7-Eleven Taiwan’s X-STORE 9 uses a commercial-grade, vision-only recognition system developed by the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), so shoppers can take products and leave without scanning barcodes or queuing. According to ITRI, the unmanned store reaches 95% accuracy in recognizing items picked up or returned to the shelves.
The system combines multiple cameras, depth sensing and AI image analytics to follow several customers at once and register each product they take. ITRI said the project marks smart retail’s move from R&D validation to commercial operation.
X-STORE 9 opened in late 2025 at National Central University in Taoyuan. The 82 m² store has 140 ceiling-mounted cameras and completes checkout in about 30 seconds. It also houses Taiwan’s first automated parcel pickup micro-warehouse, which adapts its storage compartments to the size of each package.
7-Eleven Taiwan, operated by Uni-President, has worked with ITRI on smart retail since 2022, starting with a first-generation AIoT Smart Store and an AIoT 2.0 upgrade. The group runs nine unmanned stores, five of them on university campuses.
