Ampol launches plan for EV fast charging sites at service stations
The brand inaugurated its first AmpCharge at its Woolworths MetroGo forecourt in Sydney with the goal of opening a total of 120 installations by December of 2023.
Ampol officially opened its first AmpCharge electric vehicle charging site at its Ampol Woolworths MetroGo site in Alexandria, Sydney. It is the first of an initial roll out of 120 new sites to be delivered on the brand’s forecourts in Australia by December 2023.
This opening is part of an initial pilot rollout that includes a total of five sites at the company’s fuel retail network. New AmpCharge infrastructure is set to be launched in Carseldine QLD, Northmead NSW, Altona North VIC, and Belmont WA over the coming month. Each equipment is capable of charging an EV at up to 150kw and has the capacity to charge at least two vehicles concurrently.
“The delivery of AmpCharge infrastructure on our forecourts will be complemented by new at-destination charging solutions in places like shopping centres, and our home charging infrastructure offer. We will also leverage our knowledge and strong relationships across industry to provide charging solutions to fleet infrastructure that will support energy transition,” said Matt Halliday, Ampol Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.
The first five installations are equipped with solar panels and solar battery storage provisiones, another trial set to be rolled out across its network. In addition, the energy used by the AmpCharge chargers will be 100% offset by Large Scale Generation Certificates (LGCs) to net the equivalent electricity consumption.
“Our vision for the Ampol EV network is to develop a best-in-class EV charging ecosystem enabling the rollout of our own charging assets and allowing us to partner with others to form Australia’s leading EV charging network. The milestone today is part of the first-stage rollout of fast charging technology to sites across our national retail network,” added Brent Merrick, Executive General Manager for International and New Business at Ampol.
The company’s plan to open approximately 120 sites by December 2023 is part of an agreement with the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) announced in July last year, with ARENA providing partial funding backed by the Australian Government.
