Co-op is undertaking the largest single rollout of electronic shelf edge labels by a UK or Irish retailer, replacing traditional paper labels with digital alternatives across its network of nearly 2,400 stores.

The rollout is intended to modernise in-store operations and improve the overall shopping experience. The new digital labels will provide clearer and more detailed product information, including nutritional content, allergen data, country of origin, local sourcing notes, and display real-time pricing with member-exclusive offers.

In addition to reducing paper waste, the smart labels can support inventory management and facilitate faster picking of online grocery orders. The technology includes features such as flashing indicators, which guide staff to specific items.

“With convenience at the heart of everything we do, Co-op is committed to exploring innovative technology that improves how we operate,” said Steven Logue, Co-op’s Head of Operations. “These electronic labels can enhance transparency, reduce waste, and make everyday tasks more efficient — supporting our growth ambitions and improving the in-store experience for customers and members alike.”

The partnership also marks a milestone for VusionGroup’s presence in the UK and Ireland, as the company continues to expand its footprint among physical retailers undergoing digital transformation.

The retailer plans to equip around 1,500 locations with the technology by the end of this year, with full deployment expected by the end of 2026.
