DHL drives sustainability with Africa’s first electric Superlink truck
Pilot project with Unilever and Volvo aims to test EV performance and accelerate low-carbon logistics in emerging markets.
DHL Supply Chain has introduced Africa’s first electric Superlink truck in South Africa, partnering with Unilever and Volvo Trucks to pilot sustainable freight solutions. The initiative combines a fully electric Volvo FMX 6X4 tractor with an 18-meter double trailer to support Unilever’s supply chain operations.
The pilot aims to assess performance, cost efficiency, and environmental benefits of electric vehicles versus diesel trucks in a region where EV infrastructure remains limited. Charging will take place at Unilever facilities using Aeversa-supplied infrastructure, with DHL planning to transition to renewable energy for future deployments.
“This pilot underscores DHL’s commitment to sustainable logistics despite infrastructure challenges,” said Bremer Pauw, Managing Director of DHL Supply Chain Africa. Volvo Trucks South Africa echoed the sentiment, noting its long-standing efforts to introduce cleaner technologies, including Euro 5 trucks assembled locally since 2012.
Unilever sees the project as a step toward its net-zero emissions target by 2039. “Collaborations such as this are crucial steps toward reaching our sustainability objectives, enabling us to test and implement innovative transportation solutions that foster a greener supply chain,” said Simphiwe Dlamini, National Transport Manager at Unilever South Africa.
Data from the trial will be benchmarked against DHL’s Euro 5 diesel fleet, informing future strategies and potentially accelerating the adoption of electric trucks across Africa.
