DHL Freight tests hydrogen fuel cell trucks
Pilot under EU’s H2Haul project aims to prove hydrogen’s viability for heavy-duty, low-emission logistics.
DHL Freight, in partnership with the BMW Group, IVECO, and TEAL Mobility, has launched two hydrogen fuel cell trucks into daily service as part of the European H2Haul project.
The initiative, funded by the EU’s Clean Hydrogen Partnership, aims to evaluate how practical hydrogen fuel cell technology is for heavy-duty logistics and to accelerate its commercial rollout across Europe. Both trucks have a range of over 700 kilometers and can refuel in about 25 minutes.
While the trucks currently use conventional hydrogen, DHL Freight plans to switch to green hydrogen during the project. Alongside H2Haul, the company is also testing hydrogen combustion engines through the HyCET project to compare both technologies under everyday logistics conditions.
In addition to the H2Haul project, DHL Freight is participating in the HyCET research project as a logistics partner and user. For this project, also led by BMW, DHL Freight will test four hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks.
These initiatives are key steps in DHL Freight’s broader commitment to decarbonize its road transport operations and support the DHL Group’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
