Gridserve opens new Electric Super Hub at Cornwall Services in the UK
The new site features new upgrades to manage grid capacity as well as a battery storage system that can deliver energy to drivers or back to the grid.
Gridserve has opened a new Electric Super Hub located at Cornwall Services, a major main road service station in the UK.
Drivers will be able to charge their electric cars, vans or motorcycles during the summer holiday. While they charge their vehicles, they can also spend their time shopping or at one of the restaurants that are located in the area such as Taco Bell, Costa, Rowe’s Cornish Bakers and Saltrock clothing.
The location offers six high power, 350kW-capable electric vehicles (EV) chargers, plus a further six low power, 22kW-capable AC chargers for guests staying at the onsite Holiday Inn.
This flagship Electric Super Hub features a few upgrades for the company’s latest equipment that have been feasibility tested in recent months to better manage the site’s limited grid capacity. The most noticeable upgrade is the solar canopy which, in addition to providing shelter, also generates energy that goes directly to the EV chargers.
Next up is the 1MW battery storage system nestled into a corner of the site. This works like a miniature power plant, able to store energy generated from the solar panels and either deliver it to charging customers or, in times of peak demand, back to the grid to the wholesale market.
Gridserve has also recently submitted planning permission to build a solar farm the size of two football pitches adjacent to Cornwall Services. The idea of this so-called private wire connection would be to directly connect solar to both battery and chargers, delivering enough green energy to deliver four million miles of EV driving.
