HRS unveils new hydrogen station near Lyon airport

The latest HRS40 station marks a key milestone in France’s Zero Emission Valley initiative.

French hydrogen refueling specialist HRS has officially inaugurated its HRS40 station near Lyon-Saint-Exupéry Airport, marking a significant step in the deployment of clean mobility infrastructure in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.

Commissioned on behalf of HYmpulsion, the new station was inaugurated on June 30 and offers a refueling capacity of up to one ton of hydrogen per day, enough to serve around 150 vehicles daily. The station forms part of the ambitious Zero Emission Valley (ZEV) initiative led by HYmpulsion, which aims to accelerate the rollout of carbon-free mobility by developing hydrogen production, storage, distribution, and vehicle deployment across the region.

“This station strengthens our network in a strategic location at the heart of a multimodal hub that brings together rail, road, and air transport,” said Florian Chevallier, President of HYmpulsion.

Strategically located on the EU’s TEN-T central transport network, the HRS40 station not only supports intensive road transport but also contributes to the decarbonization of operations at Lyon’s international airport. It joins two other HYmpulsion stations in the Greater Lyon area, Saint-Priest and Vénissieux, creating a robust hydrogen corridor within a 20-kilometer radius.

HRS CEO Hassen Rachedi praised the collaboration and technical execution: “We are very pleased to inaugurate this new high-capacity station for HYmpulsion, with whom we have a long-standing relationship in this ambitious program.”

Three additional HRS stations for HYmpulsion are slated to open later in 2025 in Aubenas, Malataverne, and Saint-Egrève, further expanding the regional hydrogen refueling network.

By 2027, ZEV plans to introduce 80 hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks and 200 light commercial vehicles, with a target of surpassing 1,000 hydrogen vehicles by 2028.
