Hysolar’s hydrogen station marks milestone in the Netherlands

Greenpoint’s site located in the city of Nieuwegein is a testament of the growth of hydrogen mobility after being active for nearly a year.

The Hysolar Greenpoint hydrogen station located in the city of Nieuwegein, Netherlands, has reached 5,000 refuelling sessions. This milestone is proof of not only the growth of hydrogen mobility in the country but of the interest of drivers to switch from electric vehicles (EVs) to new alternatives energies. 

After being operational for almost over a year, officially opening in October 2021, the site is the result of a collaboration between four firms: Aannemingsbedrijf Jos Scholman, Allied Waters, Van Kessel/Greenpoint and Scholt Energy. Although the first vehicles that refuelled at the station belonged to these companies, more vehicles have accessed the site and became part of the transition to clean energies.

"More than 60% percent of refuelling is now for other customers. We also see this in the payment methods that are used, such as the Multitankcard and Travelcard. More and more other companies are joining the transition to emission-free driving and are finding their way to our filling station," said Perry Wens, Account Manager for Energy Transition at Van Kessel/Greenpoint. 

After this recent success, all companies involved in the project have agreed to further enhance the facility in the near future. The next development planned is for the Hysolar Greenpoint station to produce green hydrogen, which is currently being transported by tanker, similar to other forecourts that operate throughout the region.

"The plan is to start producing hydrogen locally. In 2023 an electrolyser will come into use that produces green hydrogen with green electricity from the nearby solar park, which has a capacity of 9 megawatt peak. The electrolyser has a capacity of 2.5 MW and can produce 300 tonnes of hydrogen annually; enough for 1500 passenger cars or 60 public transport buses,” added Wens.
