JERA signs 27‑year LNG supply deal with QatarEnergy
Agreement secures 3 MTPA starting in 2028 to support Japan’s long‑term energy stability.
JERA has signed a long‑term liquefied natural gas (LNG) sale and purchase agreement with QatarEnergy for 3.0 million tonnes per annum over 27 years, with deliveries slated to begin in 2028. The deal was concluded on the sidelines of LNG 2026 in Doha by Yukio Kani, Global CEO and Chair of JERA, and Saad Sherida Al‑Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs and President & CEO of QatarEnergy.
Under the agreement, cargoes will be supplied on a delivered ex‑ship from Qatar’s LNG production facilities, reinforcing a partnership that spans more than three decades. Qatar has long been a key contributor to Japan’s energy security, including emergency LNG deliveries following the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
JERA said the contract aligns with Japan’s Seventh Strategic Energy Plan, which continues to recognize natural gas as an important energy source even after carbon neutrality is achieved. With electricity demand expected to grow the company views gas‑fired power as critical to grid reliability and supply stability.

JERA added that it will continue building a diversified LNG portfolio sourced from the Middle East, Asia Pacific, the United States and other regions, while enhancing flexible procurement and operations.
