LIFTE H2 launches hydrogen refueling station for Open Grid Europe’s pilot
Installation marks a key step in advancing Germany’s clean energy infrastructure.
LIFTE H2, part of the energy infrastructure and operations firm px Group, has delivered a hydrogen refueling station for Open Grid Europe (OGE), located at OGE’s KruH2 pilot site in Krummhörn, near Emden.
The installation includes buffer storage, a pre-compressor, and two hydrogen storage tanks, underscoring the company’s technical expertise and px Group’s commitment to scalable, low-carbon energy solutions. Awarded in 2023, the project involved the design, installation, and commissioning of a custom-built hydrogen solution to support OGE’s internal fleet of hydrogen-powered vehicles.
“This facility helps advance hydrogen infrastructure and reflects our commitment to renewable energy and sustainability. It provides OGE with hands-on experience in using hydrogen as a key energy carrier,” said Paul Karzel, Managing Director of LIFTE H2 GmbH.
Central to the facility is a high-pressure hydrogen dispenser capable of refueling at 700 bar (70 MPa), enabling efficient and safe service for a range of light-duty hydrogen vehicles.
The station also features a dual compressor system to enhance reliability and performance, a 300-bar buffer storage tank for consistent supply, and two large tanks offering substantial storage capacity.
Hydrogen at the site is produced using a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyser powered by renewable energy from nearby wind farms. Located in a grid-congested region, the site makes use of otherwise curtailed wind power, ensuring that hydrogen production is both local and zero-emission.
