Mexico: Pemex loses 1,207 gas stations
Pemex had a network of 7,954 gas stations in the second quarter of 2020, representing a 13.2% drop compared to the 9,161 registered in the same period of 2019.
The Pemex brand lost 1,207 service stations between April and June this year, the company said in its quarterly report. Pemex accounted for a total of 7,954 gas stations, representing a loss of 13.2% compared to 9,161 registered in the same period in 2019.
Of the 7,954 Pemex service stations, 7,909 are managed by third parties, and the remaining 45 are owned by Pemex Transformación Industrial in the form of self-service stations.
Petroleos Mexicanos detailed in its quarterly report that the company has registered 638 gas stations under the scheme of sublicensing brand, while 2,698 operate under brands other than Pemex and are supplied both by Pemex and through direct import.
Although 2020 has seen many brands - ExxonMobil, Arco, BP, and Shell - break into the Mexican wholesale market and import their own oil products, Pemex remains the main supplier by providing 86.8% of gasoline and 72.2% of diesel, according to Cofece. Only 20% of total fuel imports in Mexico come from private companies, according to the Secretariat of Energy of Mexico.
The drop in demand for fuel generated by the Covid-19 pandemic forced Pemex to reduce the volume of fuel imports.
