ORLEN launches new sustainable station model in Poland

The new forecourt produces nearly 90% of the electricity needed to operate thanks to the implementation of photovoltaic panels alongside simultaneous production of heat and cold.

ORLEN has built a new sustainable service station in Poland that features photovoltaic panels and simultaneous production of heat and cold. With this upgrade, the site now produces almost 90% of the electricity needed for its operation.

After a successful pilot project in Bydgoszcz, the company will soon begin its implementation at other stations across the country. The basic idea was to reduce the amount of energy required for efficient operation of the facility. 

For this pilot project, the station consumed about 201 MWh of electricity per year to power air conditioners, refrigeration or heating systems, among others. Both the heat and photovoltaic equipment were installed to help reduce the station's electricity demand to 37 MWh per year.

“ORLEN has the right potential to test cutting-edge technological solutions to make our operations even greener. We are not limiting ourselves to the power industry, petrochemicals or refineries. We are also introducing innovations at fuel stations, which are the hallmark of the ORLEN brand," says Daniel Obajtek, CEO of PKN ORLEN.

The system tested at the ORLEN station in Bydgoszcz was developed by engineers from the Polish company IGLOO, a manufacturer of refrigeration equipment, inverter and cogeneration units and heat pumps. Several data was collected during the pilot for the installation of this system at subsequent stations of the network.
