Shell Recharge, REWE partner to support e-mobility in Germany
The mobility company will open charging sites powered by green electricity across the retailer’s 400 outlets nationwide in the coming years.
Shell Deutschland and REWE Group have joined forces to launch the first largest format of Shell Recharge fast charging points at a REWE store in Berlin. With a total of six charging points, customers will be able to charge their electric vehicles (EV) while shopping with ultra-fast (up to 300 kW) or fast (up to 150 kW) options.
This first location is one of 400 REWE supermarkets and PENNY discount stores nationwide that will be equipped with Shell Recharge charging points powered entirely by green electricity in the coming years. Through this initiative, both companies want to promote the energy transition and make it easier for drivers to switch to EVs.
"We want to be the partner of choice and offer charging solutions wherever and whenever customers want it - in a parking lot in front of the supermarket, at the streetlight, at home in the garage, at work, on the road or at our Shell service station," said Linda van Schaik, General Manager of Mobility DACH and responsible for Shell's service station business in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
The mobility firm aims to become a net zero company by 2050, developing and deploying new solutions for the alternative energy market. Globally, Shell has a target of over 500,000 charging points by 2025 and over 2,500,000 by 2030.
"The retail sector plays a central role in the ramp-up of e-mobility suitable for everyday use. REWE Group is working with strong partners to expand charging options at our stores. As part of our own climate ambitions, we plan to install a total of 6,000 charging points at existing owned and rented properties as well as new buildings across Germany by 2025. Our partnership with Shell makes an important contribution to this," added Telerik Shishmanov, CFO of REWE Group.
Shell and the REWE Group, in addition to its subsidiary Lekkerland, have a long-standing relationship working together throughout several markets in Europe. Many store-formats were deployed at branded service stations, starting in 2014 with the "BILLA stop & store" store concept in the Czech Republic, 2018’s introduction of the "BILLA Unterwegs" store format in Austria’s forecourts, and the recent establishment of a fast-charging network at at least 100 BILLA, BILLA PLUS, PENNY and BIPA locations.
