Spain: Fuel station offers discounts for recycling plastics
A fuel station in Granada, Andalucía, becomes the first of its kind in Spain to offer discounts on refuelling and goods at the store in exchange for recycled plastic.
A gas station in Granada, Andalucía, has joined the fight for plastic reduction by issuing discounts on fuel and goods for recycling plastic at the site, reports The Olive Press. The Frandagas petrol station installed a new machine where anyone can bring used cans and bottles for discounts vouchers.
The machine issues 2, 3, or 6 cent vouchers depending on the item, which can be accumulated to eventually offer discounts on customers’ purchases.
Owners Immaculada and Juan de Dios told The Olive Press that the idea stemmed from a trip to Germany two years ago. “We were in Germany when we began to see that in supermarkets people used machines that gave discounts if a plastic bottle was recycled,” said Immaculada. With the help of Murcia-based recycling company Ganamos Reciclando, the machine supplier, they brought the idea home in Spain.
The Frandagas petrol station, which serves to over 1,000 drivers daily, invested nearly €50,000 in the installation of the machine. Owners declared to The Olive Press that although profit margins at the site are low, they both see this move as an opportunity to contribute in helping the environment and encouraging others to do their part.
