SPAR Switzerland embraces Bitcoin payments
Zug store became one of the country’s first supermarkets to accept cryptocurrency at checkout.
SPAR Switzerland has taken a new step in retail by enabling Bitcoin payments at one of its stores in Zug.
The location is now listed on BTC Map, a community-driven platform that highlights businesses around the world accepting cryptocurrency. This move positions the store among the first supermarkets in Switzerland where customers can pay directly at the checkout using Bitcoin via the Lightning Network (LNURL).
The implementation is powered by OpenCryptoPay, an open peer-to-peer standard developed to support in-person crypto transactions.
Zug, often referred to as “Crypto Valley,” continues to lead in crypto innovation, and the retailer’s move further reinforces the city’s reputation as a hub for digital finance.
The initiative marks a significant milestone in bringing everyday crypto payments into the retail mainstream. By adopting the OpenCryptoPay solution, SPAR Switzerland is helping bridge the gap between digital currencies and physical retail.
