St1 establishes first EV-only charging station in Finland
The move marks a milestone in the company's Nordic strategy to phase out fossil fuels and expand ultra-fast charging network.
St1 will open its first electric vehicle (EV)-only charging station in Finland at the Shell Ylöjärvi site, which has ceased to sell liquid fossil fuels. While fuel sales are being discontinued due to the lack of an environmental permit, the HelmiSimpukka restaurant and Car Wash services will remain in operation.
Passenger car fuel sales at the St1 site ended earlier this spring, and heavy-duty diesel distribution will stop, to transform the location into a charging hub for EVs. The Ylöjärvi station will feature ultra-fast chargers with a maximum output of 400 kW, offering CCS2 connectors under the former fuel canopy in a drive-through design.
“We’ve been expanding our St1 Charge high-power charging network across the Nordics at a rapid pace this year. However, this marks the first time in Finland that we’re continuing operations at the station without any liquid fuels,” said Juha Vanninen, Head of Retail in Finland at St1.
The company currently operates 41 fast-charging stations in Finland, nine of which opened this year, alongside 37 in Sweden and 30 in Norway. Its first EV-only charging station was inaugurated in Oslo in spring 2025.
As part of its broader One Brand strategy, the Shell Ylöjärvi station will be rebranded in autumn 2025. This follows the phase-out of St1’s Shell licensing agreement, which will see around 630 Shell-branded sites converted across the Nordics. The unified network will total approximately 1,250 energy stations.
Alongside EV charging, St1 continues to invest in renewable fuels and biogas infrastructure for heavy transport. The company’s charging expansion has received co-funding from the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) and support from the Finnish Energy Authority.
