St1 strengthens nordic biogas network in Finland
Expansion supports sustainable freight transport across key logistics corridors.
St1 has expanded its biogas refuelling infrastructure in Finland with the addition of two new liquefied biogas (LBG) stations for heavy-duty vehicles.
The new sites are located near the Shell station in Hirvaskangas and at the St1 Truck station in Voutila, Vantaa. These additions mark a continued effort to support low-emission freight transport in Finland and across the Nordic region.
The Hirvaskangas location plays a strategic role in connecting long-distance traffic between southern and northern Finland, while also forming part of the EU’s Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).
Meanwhile, the Voutila station is positioned within a key logistics hub in Vantaa, enhancing accessibility for freight operators in the capital region.
“By switching to biogas, companies can significantly cut their logistics chain’s carbon footprint—sometimes by more than 100 per cent, depending on the biogas origin," said Hans von Nandelstadh, Nordic Biogas Manager at St1.
These two stations follow the first wave of LBG infrastructure launched by St1 in 2023. The company plans to continue expanding its Finnish network with new LBG refuelling points in Iisalmi and Tupos (Liminka) later this year, with the long-term goal of building a nationwide LBG distribution system.
Currently, the biogas distributed at St1 stations is sourced from production sites across Northern Europe. From 2026 onward, Finnish-produced biogas will become available when Suomen Lantakaasu Oy, a joint venture between St1 Biokraft and dairy cooperative Valio, commissions new domestic production facilities.
