Two new service areas raise the bar on Italy's ring road

Each area covers 25,000 m2 and is designed to serve a wide range of road users around Milan.

Milan's outer ring road has a new pair of landmarks for travelers, with the simultaneous opening of the Muzza Est and Muzza Ovest service areas on the A58-TEEM tangential motorway.

The two sites, positioned strategically in the eastern quadrant of the city to ease connections between three of Italy's busiest motorways — the A1, A35 and A4 — are managed by Gruppo Sarni and form part of the broader infrastructure operated by Tangenziale Esterna, a company within the ASTM Group.

Each area covers 25,000 square meters and is designed to serve a wide range of road users, with dedicated spaces for passenger cars, heavy vehicles and coaches. The commercial offer includes a bar, pizzeria and market alongside practical amenities such as showers, a baby room and camper service.

"This work represents a virtuous example of public-private collaboration," said Franco Lucente, Lombardy's Regional Assessor for Transport, who attended the inauguration alongside senior ASTM executives.

Sustainability runs through the project's architecture. Both sites are powered in part by rooftop solar panels and use LED lighting throughout, while each area is equipped with a 100kW dual-connector EV charging point. Accessibility for mobility-impaired visitors was also built in from the ground up, with reserved parking and universally designed spaces throughout.
