Uruguay welcomes its first EV charging station

State-owned UTE inaugurated the charging location in collaboration with public entities and Huawei, featuring a total capacity of 600 kW.

The National Administration of Power Plants and Electrical Transmissions (UTE in Spanish) in Uruguay has inaugurated the country’s first electric vehicle charging station. 

Established in cooperation with the Ministry of Industry, Energy, and Mining, the site is a contribution from Huawei to the Uruguayan government. Located in the city of Montevideo, the station has an installed capacity of 600 kW, expandable up to 720 kW.

"This is a key milestone for UTE and for Uruguay, adding new equipment to our National Electric Route. This charging station combines three elements: a great location, quality energy, and very high charging power. We will continue to move forward under the framework of State Policies, committed to improving the quality of life for all Uruguayans," said Silvia Emaldi, President of UTE.

The charging station features a central power unit with a total capacity of 600 kW in direct current, along with a dynamic load distribution system between the dispensers. Two dispensers are equipped with ultra-fast charging connectors capable of reaching up to 480 kW.

Soon, the station will be expanded with the addition of five double dispensers, increasing the total number of fast connectors to 10, each capable of offering up to 240 kW. This expansion will allow the station to charge up to 12 cars simultaneously.
