Walmart Chile, Copec launch hydrogen station for heavy trucks
The facility will supply green hydrogen to heavy-duty trucks serving Walmart Chile’s logistics network, supporting a pilot project aimed at advancing low-emission freight transport in the country.
Walmart Chile and Copec have inaugurated Chile’s first hydrogen refueling station designed for heavy-duty trucks, designed to support the deployment of green hydrogen in freight transport operations.
Located at Walmart Chile’s distribution center in Quilicura, the site enables the operation of the first hydrogen-powered truck used by logistics company Marval for the retailer’s distribution activities. The project is part of the Hidrohaul technology program, which is supported by Chilean development agency Corfo and aims to accelerate the use of green hydrogen in transport applications.
Developed through a public-private partnership launched in 2024, the initiative brings together Walmart Chile, Copec, Marval Clean Logistics, IEE and Mining3 Chile. Copec led the implementation of the hydrogen station, while Walmart Chile provides the site, green hydrogen production and access to a logistics hub that handles hundreds of truck movements each day.
The station is designed to support trucks with a driving range of more than 600 km. According to the project partners, the technology could prevent around 380 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually, equivalent to removing roughly 83 gasoline-powered cars from the road for one year.
The Quilicura hydrogen station builds on Walmart Chile’s previous investments in green hydrogen, including the launch of a hydrogen production plant in 2023 and the introduction of hydrogen-powered transport projects in recent years.
Looking ahead, Walmart Chile plans to use the experience gained through the pilot to support a larger-scale hydrogen project at its El Peñón distribution center, where up to 10 hydrogen-powered trucks could be deployed by 2028.
