Inspired by law enforcement practices, the initiative is now being tested in the retail sector, with store-level staff wearing the cameras as part of a pilot program in several undisclosed locations, according to a report by CNBC.
Some stores have placed signs informing customers of "body-worn cameras in use," as seen in social media posts.
“This is a pilot we are testing in one market, and we will evaluate the results before making any longer-term decisions,” a Walmart spokesperson explained to CNBC.
This move is part of a broader trend in the convenience store sector to adopt technology-driven security solutions, including AI-powered surveillance.
While the cameras could assist in preventing theft and catching perpetrators, Walmart emphasizes that the initiative is primarily focused on worker safety, particularly during the busy holiday shopping season.
