Wawa confirms data from 30 million users may be up for sale after hack
Data from as many as 30 million credit cards is going up for sale in the Dark Web, confirms the East Coast chain.
Wawa Inc., the large U.S. convenience store and gas station chain that was hacked in December, has acknowledged reports that criminals have put stolen card data up for sale on the dark web.
The Wawa chain of convenience stores said in December that it had discovered card-skimming malware on point-of-sale machines at just about all of its 850 stores.
The retailer has alerted their payment card processor, payment card brands, and card issuers to heighten fraud monitoring activities to help further protect any customer information.
“We remain confident that only payment card information was involved, and that no debit card PIN numbers, credit card CVV2 numbers or other personal information were involved,” said Wawa in a press release.
They have also asked customers to remain vigilant in reviewing charges on their payment card statements and to promptly report any unauthorized use to the bank or financial institution that issued their payment card by calling the number on the back of the card.
