AVIA VOLT tests EV charging lamp posts in Zwolle
Pilot with city and partners introduces integrated charging in streetlights to expand infrastructure efficiently.
AVIA VOLT has supported the deployment of the first operational electric vehicle (EV) charging lamp posts in Zwolle, capital of Netherlands’ Overijssel province, marking a pilot that explores how existing infrastructure can be used to expand public charging networks more efficiently.
The initiative, developed in collaboration with CityCharge, the Municipality of Zwolle and Makersfabriek; positions AVIA VOLT as a contributor to alternative charging solutions that reduce installation complexity and optimize available urban space. By using existing lighting infrastructure, the model allows new charging points to be added without the need for standalone units, supporting faster rollout in dense urban areas.
Zwolle offers significant potential for scaling this concept, with nearly 3,000 streetlights located next to parking spaces. This creates opportunities to expand charging access while maintaining a streamlined public environment.
The project was tested at the Makersfabriek site, where the partners evaluated the performance and usability of the integrated system. The initial results were described as promising, supporting the transition from testing to operational deployment.
The pilot reflects AVIA VOLT’s broader focus on supporting the energy transition through practical solutions that can be implemented within existing infrastructure. As demand for EV charging grows, such approaches may help municipalities accelerate deployment while limiting physical and visual impact in urban settings.
