CU has introduced a new convenience store format that repurposes former gas stations, unveiling its first Re:fuel location in Pocheon, Gyeonggi Province, as part of a broader urban regeneration initiative.

The concept aims to give new commercial use to closed fuel stations, which have been declining across South Korea amid changing mobility trends, including the growth of eco-friendly vehicles and pressures on station profitability. By converting these underutilized sites into convenience stores, CU seeks to create new retail hubs while improving the use of vacant roadside properties.

The first CU Re:fuel store occupies a former gas station site connecting Uijeongbu and a major highway corridor. The retailer retained existing infrastructure such as the canopy, signage, and parking areas, reducing development time and costs while preserving the site's visibility for motorists.

Designed to serve drivers, truck operators, bus passengers, and nearby residents, the location combines a traditional convenience store with dedicated rest facilities. The ground floor offers standard convenience products and bulk merchandise, while the second floor features reclining chairs, a ramen library, and an instant noodle preparation area. A self-checkout system was also installed to support quick purchases of products frequently bought on the go.

According to the retailer, the Sohul IC store has recorded an average basket size around 20% higher than conventional locations during its first two weeks of operation. Strong sales of freshly prepared smoothies and instant ramen indicate that the site is attracting longer customer visits rather than functioning solely as a stopover store.

“By utilizing the advantages of an existing facility and location such as a closed gas station, we planned a differentiated convenience store model that adds new value to an idle space,” said Park Jeong-kwon, Head of Operations Support at BGF Retail.

CU said it is considering additional CU Re:fuel locations at sites with strong redevelopment potential as it expands the concept.
