FamilyMart unveils flagship FAMIMA store concept
New format aims to transform the convenience store experience through redesigned spaces, exclusive products and destination-focused retail concepts.
FamilyMart has launched a new retail concept called FAMIMA as part of its Next FamilyMart Project, an initiative designed to explore the future of convenience stores ahead of the company's 45th anniversary next September.
The retailer will debut the concept with the opening of the inaugural location in Tokyo. This first flagship store was built around the idea of creating a c-store that customers actively seek out rather than simply visit for everyday necessities.
This new format moves beyond the traditional model by focusing on store design, merchandising and customer experience. The concept has been developed in collaboration with creative director NIGO® and aims to combine convenience with discovery, entertainment and lifestyle-oriented retail.
Located in Tokyo’s Azabudai district, the flagship store features a redesigned layout, dedicated product areas, exclusive merchandise and new food-to-go options. The site also incorporates outdoor seating, takeaway services and a rooftop green space intended to create a more community-focused environment.
A key element of the concept is a reimagined sales floor designed to encourage exploration and product discovery. FamilyMart has introduced specialized displays for categories such as Convenience Wear and created a retail environment intended to resemble a destination store rather than a traditional convenience outlet.
The company is also expanding its intellectual property strategy through the introduction of a new official FAMIMA character, which will appear on exclusive products available at the flagship location before being rolled out more broadly across the network.
“Through our new FAMIMA initiative, we aim to unlock the full potential of convenience stores and bring it to life,” said Tatsuo Odani, President of FamilyMart.
While the concept will initially be showcased at the Azabudai flagship store, FamilyMart said selected elements of the FAMIMA format could eventually be introduced across its nationwide network, bringing aspects of the next-generation convenience store experience to customers throughout Japan.
