Hydrogen fuel consumption reaches new peak in South Korea
Local environment ministry stated that H2 consumption has risen to almost 50% due to the amount of buses powered by the alternative energy.
Hydrogen (H2) fuel consumption by road vehicles in South Korea has grown 46% during the first half of the year, according to a recent announcement by the local Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
A total of 3,798 tonnes of H2 have been sold in the country, reaching a new peak. The ministry expects that this trend continues throughout the year, with demand growing up to 8,400 tonnes within the second half, as reported by Hydrogen Insight.
This growth coincides with the increase of hydrogen-powered buses registered in the country, which recently exceeded 1,000 according to the Ministry of Environment. This has prompted Hyundai to increase its annual manufacturing capacity to 3,000.
Currently, there are a total of 989 H2 buses on the road in the country, thanks to the addition of 339 new vehicles in the last semester. South Korea aims to have a total of 20,000 hydrogen buses on the road by 2030 as part of its decarbonization strategy.
