Ionity opens first London urban charging hub
The new Greenwich site marks Ionity’s expansion into urban EV charging, offering 12 ultra-rapid chargers and supporting growing demand across the UK capital.
Ionity has opened its first urban charging site in London, marking a strategic expansion beyond its traditional motorway network as the company seeks to increase high-power charging availability in densely populated areas.
Located at Greenwich Shopping Park in southeast London, the new hub features 12 charging bays capable of delivering up to 400 kW and is open to all electric vehicle (EV) drivers. The site is situated near major retail destinations, supermarkets, restaurants and transport routes, providing convenient access for residents, visitors and commercial drivers.
The Greenwich opening is part of Ionity’s broader urban charging strategy, which aims to meet growing demand for EV infrastructure in cities. The company said the site is the first of several planned London locations and follows the launch of an urban charging hub in Birmingham earlier this year.
“Our expansion goes beyond long-distance travel to enable reliable charging where demand is growing fastest: in urban areas,” said Jeroen van Tilburg, CEO of Ionity. “We're bringing up to 400 kW into urban areas, giving drivers the speed and reliability they expect from Ionity, closer to where they live and work.”
The project also supports Ionity’s partnership with Uber. The companies are using charging demand and utilization data to help identify optimal locations for future infrastructure while providing ride-hailing drivers with access to ultra-fast charging options.
The company is currently developing additional urban charging locations across London, Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow and Edinburgh. By 2030, Ionity expects around 30% of its network to be located in dense urban areas, reflecting the increasing role of city-based charging infrastructure in supporting EV adoption across the UK.
