Murphy USA confirms Donald Smith Jr. as CFO

Former interim finance chief takes on the role permanently amid broader leadership changes.

Murphy USA has appointed Donald Smith Jr. as senior vice president, chief financial officer, and treasurer, making his role permanent after serving in an interim capacity since October. The appointment took effect on April 3, according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Smith stepped into the interim CFO role following the departure of Gallagher Jeff, who went on to become chief financial officer at convenience retail competitor Arko Corp. in December. His confirmation marks another step in Murphy USA’s ongoing executive team reshaping.

The appointment comes amid a wider leadership transition under the company’s new chief executive. In January, Murphy USA promoted Mindy West from chief operating officer to president and CEO. Smith has been part of the company since 2013, when it spun out from Murphy Oil. He initially joined as vice president and controller before assuming additional responsibilities, including the treasurer role in 2024.

The leadership changes come as Murphy USA navigates a challenging business environment following two consecutive years of revenue declines. As it works to rebuild momentum, the company remains focused on expanding its store base, executing raze‑and‑rebuild projects, refreshing the Murphy brand, and pushing the QuickChek banner into new markets.
