New fuel storage facility launched at Viva Energy Hub in Geelong
Viva Energy has inaugurated a new strategic fuel storage facility in Australia.
Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles has inaugurated a new strategic fuel storage facility at the Viva Energy Hub in Geelong, part of the Australian Government’s initiative to enhance the nation’s fuel security under the Boosting Australia’s Diesel Storage Program.
The facility is intended to bolster Australia’s fuel supply resilience, particularly for diesel – a critical energy source for sectors such as agriculture, mining, road transport, emergency management, and defence. Additionally, diesel serves as a backup fuel for electricity generation in essential services including hospitals and water infrastructure.
At the launch event, Deputy Prime Minister Marles emphasized the government’s commitment to maintaining fuel security as the nation progresses toward net-zero emissions. He noted that the new facility supported up to 140 jobs during its construction and will play a key role in ensuring a stable fuel supply to underpin economic stability.
Viva Energy CEO Scott Wyatt highlighted the facility’s contribution to the company’s broader strategy of modernizing its operations. Wyatt stated that the new tanks will help strengthen supply chains and secure reliable fuel access for customers. He added that the infrastructure will also support Viva Energy’s longer-term plans to transition to lower-carbon and renewable fuel production, aligning with the company’s emissions reduction goals.
