ReFuels expands Bio-CNG network with new Carlisle station

The renewable fuel supplier is strengthening its UK refueling infrastructure with a new Bio-CNG site in northern England as freight operators seek alternatives to imported diesel.

ReFuels has begun construction of a new Bio-CNG refueling station in Carlisle, expanding its network of renewable fuel infrastructure for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) across the United Kingdom.

The facility, which is expected to become operational during the first half of 2027, will be owned and operated by CNG Fuels, a company in which ReFuels holds a 40% stake. Located near major logistics hubs, including DPD’s Carlisle delivery center, the station is designed to support both regional and long-haul freight operations along one of the UK’s key transport corridors.

“Fleet operators are telling us the same thing: they want fuel they can budget for and fuel they know will arrive,” said Philip Fjeld, CEO and co-founder of ReFuels. “Diesel gives them neither at the moment.”

The Carlisle station will be capable of refueling up to 14 trucks simultaneously and, at full utilization, is expected to serve more than 800 vehicles per day. The site will have an annual dispensing capacity exceeding 30 million kilograms of 100% renewable Bio-CNG.

The project is part of a broader network expansion strategy. ReFuels said new stations in Carlisle, Magor and Swindon are intended to increase capacity in response to growing customer demand for lower-emission fuels. Once all three locations are operational, CNG Fuels’ network capacity is expected to rise to nearly 14,000 trucks per day and approximately 460 million kilograms of Bio-CNG annually.
