Repsol expands French footprint with acquisition of Poignat fuel distributor
Poignat’s established local presence and operational expertise will allow it to strengthen its logistics capabilities.
Repsol has taken a new step in its European expansion strategy with the planned acquisition of SAS d'Exploitation des Établissements Poignat, a family‑owned fuel distributor based in western France. The Spanish energy group will purchase 100% of the company, in a deal still subject to approval from the French Competition Authority.
The move strengthens Repsol’s position in what it describes as a priority market, just months after beginning to scale its fuel‑sales operations in France. The company expects the acquisition to accelerate its organic growth, particularly around the Bordeaux region, an area it considers strategic for expanding its distribution network.
Poignat, founded more than 50 years ago, operates between the ports of Bordeaux and La Rochelle and specialises solely in fuel distribution. In 2024, the firm recorded sales of 59,000 cubic metres, serving around 2,000 customers from a logistics base with 220 cubic metres of storage capacity.
Repsol said Poignat’s established local presence and operational expertise will allow it to strengthen its logistics capabilities, broaden its understanding of the French market and leverage local teams to ensure secure, efficient supply. The integration is expected to increase Repsol’s capillarity in the region and provide a platform for future growth.
