Repsol plans second 100MW green hydrogen electrolyser
The €292-million project will produce up to 15,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually.
Repsol has announced plans to install a second large‑scale 100MW electrolyser at its Petronor refinery in Muskiz, Bizkaia, as the company accelerates its industrial decarbonisation strategy. The project, representing a €292 million investment, is scheduled to begin operations in 2029.
The initiative has been recognised by the European Commission as an Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) and will receive €160 million in funding from Spain’s NextGenerationEU-backed Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.
Capable of producing up to 15,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually, the new facility will supply Petronor’s own processes and support the wider Basque Hydrogen Corridor. Repsol estimates the project could prevent as much as 167,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year, equivalent, the company says, to two‑thirds of Spain’s fully electric car fleet in 2024.
Alongside the Petronor project, a 100MW electrolyser in Cartagena has already been approved, while a 150MW plant in Tarragona is planned to supply local industry and a forthcoming Ecoplanta for renewable methanol.
