SPAR Austria to acquire 23 Unimarkt stores
The deal aims to integrate most of the stores into SPAR’s network of independent retailers.
SPAR Austria has agreed to purchase 23 Unimarkt stores in Austria. The acquisition, which is subject to approval by competition authorities, will see the stores rebranded under the SPAR name.
The locations include 11 outlets in Styria, five in Upper Austria, four in Lower Austria, two in Salzburg, and one in Burgenland. SPAR Austria confirmed that all existing employees will be retained under the agreement.
Negotiated by SPAR Austria board member Marcus Wild, the deal aims to integrate most of the stores into SPAR’s network of independent retailers. The company plans to bring as many Unimarkt franchisees as possible into its system, ensuring continuity for staff and maintaining local supply chains.
Hans K. Reisch, SPAR Austria’s CEO, said the company’s long-standing role as a wholesale partner made it the preferred choice for Unimarkt franchisees. “We are delighted to make our experience available to future SPAR retailers and guarantee local supply in many towns and villages,” Reisch stated.
Unimarkt Managing Director Andreas Hämmerle emphasised the importance of keeping stores in their current locations. “Our franchisees are in good hands with SPAR Austria,” he said.
The acquisition underscores ongoing consolidation in Austria’s grocery sector, as retailers seek to strengthen regional presence and secure supply networks.
