Swiss hydrogen sites to close as demand lags
AGROLA and several LANDI cooperatives will shut three hydrogen fueling stations in Switzerland at the end of 2026, citing lower-than-expected adoption and higher operating costs.
AGROLA and the LANDI cooperatives of Zofingen, Sempach-Emmen and Lucerne-West will close three hydrogen fueling stations in Switzerland at the end of December 2026 as demand for the fuel remains below expectations.
The stations, located in Zofingen, Rothenburg and Schötz, were developed as part of AGROLA’s efforts to support hydrogen mobility. The companies said the decision was made jointly after market conditions failed to support the long-term profitability of the sites.
According to AGROLA, fuel cell vehicles continue to have a limited presence on Swiss roads, while rising energy costs in recent years have increased the cost of producing and using green hydrogen. As a result, demand from the transport and logistics sectors has not grown as anticipated.
The company noted that customers will be informed ahead of the closures and that the move will not result in workforce reductions at the affected locations.
Despite the shutdowns, AGROLA said it continues to view hydrogen as an energy carrier with potential to support the decarbonization of mobility and energy supply. The company and its LANDI partners intend to maintain a technology-neutral approach while evaluating different pathways for lower-emission transportation.
The closures highlight the challenges facing hydrogen mobility projects as operators seek to balance infrastructure investments with vehicle adoption and fuel demand.
