Tesco’s €40mn investment fuels major retail expansion in Ireland

Once the new locations are operational, Tesco’s total store count in Ireland will rise to 193.

Tesco Ireland is set to make a significant impact on the country’s retail landscape with a €40 million investment aimed at expanding its footprint through the opening of ten new stores. This strengthens the supermarket giant’s market position but also brings a welcome boost to the Irish economy, with 400 new jobs to be created over the next year.

The expansion will include a mix of larger supermarkets and smaller Tesco Express outlets, reinforcing the company’s strategy of reaching more customers in both urban and regional communities. Once the new locations are operational, Tesco’s total store count in Ireland will rise to 193.

A major highlight of the rollout is the upcoming opening of Tesco’s new store in Fermoy, County Cork, which is expected to launch by the end of July. This single store will account for 100 of the newly created roles. Additional locations are confirmed for counties Dublin, Galway, Louth, and Meath, with recruitment already scheduled to begin in the autumn for sites in the M1 Retail Park and in Howth.

According to Tesco Ireland CEO Geoff Byrne, the €40 million investment reflects the company’s long-term commitment to Ireland. “Our colleagues are at the heart of our business,” he said, “and we look forward to welcoming new team members this year while continuing to reward them with leading benefits and opportunities.”

The announcement has also drawn praise from the Irish government. Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Peter Burke, described the move as an “incredible boost” for local towns and the wider economy, noting that this kind of regional investment aligns closely with national goals for balanced growth and support for rural communities.
