Tooley Oil sells convenience retail arm after five decades in the business
The Sacramento-based family operator has divested 12 stores and seven car washes, retaining its wholesale fuel distribution operations
Tooley Oil Company has sold its petroleum marketing and convenience retail business to an undisclosed buyer, closing a chapter that began in 1978 when founder Mick Tooley acquired eight unbranded sites from Tosco.
The transaction, advised by Matrix Capital Markets Group, covered 12 convenience stores and seven car washes across the Sacramento metropolitan area. The sites operate under the Shell, Chevron, and the company's own Mixx Market and CleanMixx brands, both launched in 2024 as part of a rebranding push to strengthen customer loyalty.
"After nearly 50 years of our family being in the retail business, this is certainly a bittersweet moment. We're excited about what's ahead for Tooley Oil and the continued growth of our wholesale operations," said Mick Tooley.
The company grew steadily across four decades, with Mick's sons David and Michael joining in the 1990s and expanding into wholesale fuel distribution for Shell. That wholesale business was not part of the transaction and will remain under Tooley Oil's ownership, with proceeds from the sale earmarked for its continued growth.
