Vivo Energy Uganda unveils new LPG plant
Mbale facility becomes a key hub for expanding safe, affordable LPG access across the region.
Vivo Energy Uganda has commissioned a new Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) filling and storage plant in Mbale City, strengthening efforts to expand access to cleaner cooking fuels in Eastern Uganda. The facility, located at the company’s Mbale depot, will serve as the main Shell Gas hub for filling, storage and regional distribution.
The facility is expected to improve reliability and affordability of LPG for households, businesses and schools across Eastern Uganda, including communities hosting refugees. With Uganda’s LPG penetration still low, around 4% of households, Vivo Energy says the plant strengthens national infrastructure supporting the shift away from firewood and charcoal.
Joanita Mukasa Menya, Managing Director of Vivo Energy Uganda, said the facility will have a direct local impact. “This plant is more than a commercial facility. It is a practical enabler of clean cooking adoption,” she said, citing benefits from job creation to skills development and improved supply chains in Mbale and surrounding districts.
The plant also strengthens Uganda’s readiness for a modern gas economy as the country prepares for first oil production in 2026. Vivo Energy Uganda says the investment supports government goals and reinforces its role in expanding clean, safe and reliable energy solutions nationwide.
