Weigel’s appoints Doug Yawberry as CEO

Promotion comes as the convenience retailer prepares to scale beyond 100 stores and expand foodservice capabilities.

Weigel Stores has announced the promotion of Doug Yawberry to the role of Chief Executive Officer, positioning the longtime executive to lead the company through a period of continued transformation.

Yawberry’s appointment comes at a pivotal moment for the Tennessee-based convenience retailer, which is nearing the milestone of 100 store locations. His promotion marks the culmination of a leadership journey that began in 2008 when he joined Weigel’s as Director of Operations.

Rising through the ranks, Yawberry was named Vice President of Operations in 2011 and later President and COO in 2017. Under his leadership, Weigel’s has evolved from a regional fuel and convenience chain to a vertically integrated food company.

During his tenure, the company expanded from 47 to 85 stores and introduced major innovations, including the addition of an in-house bakery and the opening of a 110,000-square-foot commissary facility. This new production hub enables Weigel’s to self-manufacture proprietary food offerings and supply other retailers, strengthening its position in the competitive convenience and foodservice market.

Yawberry has also spearheaded the rollout of next-generation store formats, which emphasize digital convenience and premium food and beverage experiences.

William B. Weigel, who joined the company in 1960 and is the son of one of its founders, will continue to serve as Chairman. He remains actively involved in guiding the company’s long-term strategy and growth trajectory.
