Spar to expand into Israel in 2023
The convenience stores and supermarkets chain has announced it has signed a letter of intent with Amit Ze'ev to become its official franchisee.
Spar is set to expand its footprint across the world in 2023 by opening its first location in Israel. The Netherlands-based retail chain has announced the signing of a letter of intent with Amit Ze'ev to become its official franchisee in the country.
Ze'ev was CEO of Yeinot Bitan, a local supermarket chain, until six weeks ago, according to local news site Globes. Last March, Yeinot managed to land an agreement with European major Carrefour to convert approximately 150 of its branches into the French brand’s locations. Now the former executive will join the Dutch-based chain independently to help it expand its business.
Spar currently operates a global network of 13,623 shops throughout 48 countries, many of them administered by local franchises. The company’s annual turnover amounts to a total of 41,2 billion euros, with 63% of it belonging to the western European market. Recently, the firm confirmed its plans to enlarge its retail network by doubling its Netherlands locations over the next three years.
Regarding its associate, Amit Ze'ev has considerable experience in various branches of the retail sector. He started his career in various management roles for the Tiv Ta’am supermarket group. After that, he joined the Gottex group to manage Nike stores in Israel and the activity of the GAP brand in the country and Hungary. Before his position in Yeinot Bitan, he acted as CEO of the retail chain am:pm after leading Dor Alon, a service station and convenience store brand, for eight years.
Both Ze'ev and representatives from the Spar brand have signed a letter of intent to open a chain of supermarkets under the international brand in Israel. With this, the executive is currently building the basis for the launch of the retail brand in the country under a franchise agreement.
