Mexico pushes digital payments across fuel stations under national plan
President Claudia Sheinbaum outlines nationwide shift to cash‑free tolls and gas stations.
Mexico will move toward fully digital payments at fuel stations and toll booths as part of a nationwide effort to modernize the economy and reduce reliance on cash, President Claudia Sheinbaum announced during the 89th Banking Convention of the Association of Banks of Mexico (ABM).
Sheinbaum said the initiative stems from agreements between the Bank of Mexico, the ABM and the Ministry of Finance to update and promote electronic payment tools such as CoDi and DiMo, apps that allow commission‑free digital transactions. She emphasized that expanding their use will improve efficiency in key services.
A major commitment is that all toll booths nationwide will operate exclusively with digital payment methods before the end of the year. According to Sheinbaum, this includes information campaigns, pre‑payment schemes and phone‑based payment options designed to speed up traffic flow and reduce cash handling.
CoDi (Cobros Digitales) is a digital payment system from the Bank of Mexico that lets users make fast, secure, and fee‑free payments by scanning QR codes or using NFC through their banking app. On the other hand, DiMo (Dinero Movil) is a newer mobile payment tool that allows transfers by using only the recipient’s phone number.
The transition will also extend to fuel stations, where the goal is for all payments to be made electronically without fees for users. She noted that traditional card payments carry commissions from banks and payment equipment providers, while CoDi and DiMo offer zero‑commission options.
The president added that a broad information effort will ensure that all citizens can access and use digital payment tools without barriers. She also highlighted a commitment from Mexico’s banking sector to increase financing from 38% to 48% of GDP by 2030, expanding credit access for small and medium‑sized businesses.
Sheinbaum said these steps reflect a coordinated national strategy to modernize financial infrastructure, promote inclusion and strengthen Mexico’s formal economy through digitalization.
