QuikTrip exits urgent care business after six-year run

The retailer sells nine MedWise clinics in Oklahoma to Saint Francis Health System.

QuikTrip has agreed to sell its MedWise Urgent Care business to healthcare provider Saint Francis Health System, marking the retailer’s exit from the healthcare space after six years of operation.

The deal includes leases for nine MedWise urgent care clinics in Oklahoma, most of them located near QuikTrip’s headquarters in Tulsa. According to a C-Store Dive report, the company said proceeds from the sale will be directed to MedWise employees, including through retention bonuses.

The move brings an end to an initiative launched during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, when QuikTrip entered the urgent care market as part of a broader effort to diversify beyond its core convenience retail business.

The company opened its first MedWise clinic in fall 2020 in Coweta, Oklahoma, roughly 30 miles east of downtown Tulsa. Over the following years, the retailer expanded the concept and outlined plans to grow beyond Oklahoma, with potential locations envisioned in Wichita, Kansas, and Kansas City, Missouri.

By the end of 2023, MedWise operated 14 clinics across Oklahoma, though that network has since contracted to nine locations. With the sale to Saint Francis Health System, QuikTrip is stepping away from direct involvement in healthcare delivery, while the clinics move under the ownership of an established regional healthcare provider.
