Asda completes digital shelf label rollout in Express stores
The retailer has installed 1.2 million electronic shelf labels across 517 convenience stores, replacing more than 120,000 weekly paper price changes and expanding in-store product information.
Asda has completed the rollout of electronic shelf edge labels (eSELs) across its entire Asda Express convenience store network, as part of a broader effort to modernize store operations and improve the customer experience.
The retailer invested more than £7.5 million to install over 1.2 million electronic shelf labels across its 517 Express locations. Developed in partnership with Vusion, Renovotec and HL Display, the technology replaces the manual process of updating more than 120,000 paper price tickets each week.
The digital labels display pricing, promotional details, unit costs and product weights directly at the shelf edge. Customers can also access additional ingredient and allergen information on selected products, including bakery items.
The deployment comes as the retailer tests additional in-store technologies. Asda is currently trialing shelf-monitoring cameras in five larger stores, using image recognition systems to identify stock gaps, low inventory levels and misplaced products. Store teams receive alerts when issues are detected, enabling faster replenishment and helping keep products available on shelves.
