Asda hits 20 million recycled coffee pods in one year
The retailer now operates the UK’s largest in‑store recycling network for coffee pods in partnership with Podback.
Asda has reached over 20 million coffee pods recycled throughout its first year in partnership with Podback. Since January 2025, over 250,000 Podback bags have been returned via Asda’s toYou counters, making the company the operator of the largest in‑store coffee‑pod recycling network in the UK, with more than 600 participating stores.
The in‑store return points have proven particularly popular among shoppers seeking a simple and reliable way to recycle used pods, which are often difficult to process through kerbside systems due to their size and organic residue. Through the partnership, customers can fill a Podback bag at home and drop it at any participating Asda store during their weekly shop.
“By providing a straightforward, convenient return service in over 600 stores, we are making it easier for our customers to make sustainable choices,” said Beth Fowler, Senior Manager for Healthy and Sustainable Choices at Asda.
Some locations have seen notably high engagement. Asda Longwell Green in Bristol, for example, receives an average of 51 Podback bags per week, illustrating the strong uptake of accessible, in‑store recycling options.
Returned pods are processed so materials can be reused: coffee grounds are converted into renewable energy and soil improvers, while aluminium and plastics are transformed into new products such as beverage cans, construction materials and outdoor furniture.
