Clean Energy breaks ground on three RNG projects
Facilities in partnership with Maas Energy Works across four U.S. states to produce three million gallons of RNG annually by 2026.
Clean Energy Fuels has broken ground on three renewable natural gas (RNG) production facilities in partnership with Maas Energy Works. The projects, spanning six dairies in South Dakota, Georgia, Florida, and New Mexico, are expected to generate about three million gallons of RNG per year once fully operational.
The facilities will capture methane from a combined herd of 24,300 dairy cows, preventing emissions from entering the atmosphere. The resulting RNG will fuel heavy-duty trucking, transit, and vocational fleets across the United States, supplying Clean Energy’s network of more than 600 stations with a consistent source of negative-carbon fuel.
“Partnering with an industry leader like Maas Energy Works on these projects will enable us to quickly bring meaningful volumes of ultraclean fuel to the transportation market,” said Clay Corbus, senior vice president of renewables at Clean Energy. “We’re seeing rising demand for RNG from fleets looking to decarbonize, and breaking ground on these production facilities is a significant step forward in meeting that need.”
Maas Energy Works uses a covered lagoon system to produce RNG, a method that captures methane from manure stored in tarp-covered lagoon digesters.
The three projects, with a combined investment of $80 million, are slated for completion in 2026. Clean Energy retains rights to develop additional projects with Maas Energy Works as market conditions evolve.
