Hyundai to deploy 400 hydrogen buses across Seoul
Automaker partners with transit operators to speed H2 bus rollout and convert CNG infrastructure.
Hyundai Motor is accelerating the deployment of hydrogen‑powered city buses in the Seoul metropolitan area through a new partnership with major transport operators, infrastructure providers and a financial institution, as part of broader efforts to decarbonise road transport.
The company signed a memorandum of understanding with Dowon Transportation, Samhwan Transportation, Seun Industry and Hyundai Motor Securities to expand hydrogen bus operations and supporting infrastructure across the region. The agreement focuses on converting existing compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling sites into hydrogen stations and introducing hydrogen buses on urban routes over the next five years.
Under the plan, Dowon Transportation and Samhwan Transportation aim to deploy a combined total of 400 hydrogen fuel‑cell buses on metropolitan bus routes, gradually replacing aging CNG vehicles. Hyundai Motor will supply its Elec City hydrogen electric buses and provide specialised maintenance training to support stable fleet operations.
The Elec City hydrogen bus is equipped with a 180 kW fuel‑cell system, a 180 kW electric motor and a 78.4 kWh lithium‑ion battery. Hyundai said this allows a driving range of more than 750 kilometres on a single refueling, making it suitable for high‑frequency urban routes.
Seun Industry will work to convert existing CNG fueling hubs into hydrogen stations and plans to build 10 additional hydrogen refuelling sites in the Seoul and Incheon areas by 2029.
