Japan’s Seven-Eleven goes bilingual with English-labelled foods

Starting January 2018 Japan’s largest convenience store 7-Eleven will start selling food products with labels in English and Japanese, reports The Japan Times.

The move is the company’s response to growing number of tourists, which is expected to further increase ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.

Foreign c-store customers find it difficult to know the ingredients of some prepared foods like Japanese rice balls onigiri as they are only labelled in Japanese.

The plan, according to Seven-Eleven Japan President Kazuki Furuya, could make over 20,000 7-Eleven outlets in the country more attractive to foreign tourists and hopefully lead to strengthened brand in the United States, China, and Southeast Asian countries.
