LG Energy Solution, Honda plan 50 battery swap stations in Hanoi
Partnership targets Vietnam’s electric motorcycle growth with a pilot network and standardized battery ecosystem.
LG Energy Solution and Honda have announced plans to install around 50 battery swapping stations in Hanoi as part of a pilot project to expand electric motorcycle adoption in Vietnam. The initiative, developed in collaboration with the city of Hanoi, is set to begin in the third quarter of 2026 and will also include the deployment of approximately 500 electric motorcycles.
The project aims to introduce a network that allows riders to exchange depleted batteries for fully charged ones within minutes, addressing one of the main barriers to electric two-wheeler adoption: charging time. LG Energy Solution will provide cylindrical battery technology, manage safety systems and operate the swapping infrastructure.
Honda will contribute by developing battery packs and swapping units, as well as supplying the motorcycles for the pilot. The Japanese manufacturer holds a dominant position in Vietnam’s motorcycle market, accounting for around 86% of sales in 2025.
The initiative comes as Hanoi accelerates efforts to reduce emissions from its more than six million motorbikes. Local authorities plan to gradually restrict internal combustion engine motorcycles starting in mid-2026, with broader measures extending through 2030.
Beyond infrastructure deployment, the partnership also focuses on standardizing battery systems and supporting the development of a broader electric mobility ecosystem. The collaboration reflects a growing focus in Southeast Asia on scalable solutions for two-wheeler electrification, particularly in high-density urban markets.
