Morrisons to close 52 cafés and 17 c-stores across the UK
The move is part of the retailer’s effort to streamline operations, mitigate rising costs, and focus on areas that offer higher value to customers.
Morrisons has announced the closure of 52 cafés, 18 Market Kitchens, and 17 convenience stores as part of its ongoing optimisation strategy.
This decision comes after a comprehensive review that identified areas where operational costs were significantly higher than usage or customer demand. The move aims to streamline operations, mitigate rising costs, and focus on areas that offer higher value to customers.
In addition to the closures, the retailer will also shut down 13 florists, 35 meat counters, 35 fish counters, and four pharmacies across its store network.
The changes are expected to affect around 365 employees, though the chain anticipates redeploying the majority of impacted staff to other roles within the company. However, it has acknowledged that some colleagues may face redundancy.
While the closures will affect some of Morrisons' well-known cafés and counters, Rami Baitiéh, Chief Executive of Morrisons, emphasized that the company remains committed to maintaining the quality and appeal of its core offerings.
The changes come as Morrisons continues its second year of a comprehensive renewal program aimed at driving growth while addressing recent significant cost pressures.
