Next generation of kitchen robots land in REWE
German retailer is partnering with Circus SE for the world’s first deployment of robotic meal preparation technology within the grocery retail space.
German AI robotics company Circus SE and REWE are joining forces in an exclusive national pilot partnership to introduce the fully autonomous kitchen robots CA-1 into selected stores. Starting in autumn 2025, the initiative marks the world’s first deployment of robotic meal preparation technology within the grocery retail space.
The partnership will begin with three REWE locations, where customers will be able to order freshly prepared dishes made entirely by the CA-1 robot. The rollout includes the complete Circus Software Suite, combining customer ordering terminals, AI-powered production control, and tools for in-store operational optimization.
Over the course of an eight-month pilot phase, the two companies will jointly operate the system while conducting staff training, engaging in marketing activities, and thoroughly evaluating performance. Key indicators such as customer satisfaction, technical reliability, and day-to-day practicality will determine the outcome of the project and shape the decision on a potential wider rollout.

During the pilot, Circus SE will serve as the exclusive provider of AI-powered food robotics within REWE stores. The partnership reflects a shared ambition to integrate emerging technologies with modern neighborhood retail concepts, setting the stage for a new era in in-store foodservice.
