Puma Energy appoints Paulo Varela as Managing Director for Mozambique

Leadership change strengthens Puma Energy’s long‑term strategy across Africa’s evolving energy market.

Puma Energy has appointed Paulo Varela as Managing Director for Mozambique, reinforcing the company’s ambition to expand its role across Africa. The move aligns with Puma Energy’s long‑term vision to strengthen its position in fuel distribution, aviation services and commercial energy solutions across the country.

Varela brings more than 25 years of executive leadership experience across the energy, infrastructure and telecommunications sectors, including roles in Mozambique, East Africa, Europe and Latin America. Most recently, he served as Chief Executive Officer of Galp Mozambique.

Announcing the appointment, Ben Ouattara, Puma Energy’s Director for Africa, highlighted the company’s strategic priorities, noting: “Under his leadership, Puma Energy will continue to work collaboratively with partners and stakeholders to drive our strategic investments and energise communities in Mozambique.”

Reflecting on his new role, he said: “Puma Energy has a strong and well-established presence across Africa, and Mozambique plays an important role within that footprint. I’m excited to build on the solid foundations already in place, accelerate sustainable growth, and continue strengthening our focus on safety, operational excellence, and customer value.”

Puma Energy currently operates 35 service stations, 18 convenience stores and aviation fuel services at eight airports in Mozambique. The expanded leadership is expected to support the country’s Energy Transition Strategy, which aims for universal energy access by 2030 and increased investment in renewable sources such as solar and wind.
